Where I'm From
By Eliza Li
Grade 12
San Lorenzo High
San Lorenzo, CA

I am from calculators, from soymilk and soy sauce.

I am from the arguments that make me stronger, feeling the new fresh breath of air.

I am from the orange tree, the water that keeps it alive and fresh.

I am from watching the Chinese New Year specials and staying positive in every situation, from Janice and Juana and Li.

I am from the family that eats plain rice daily and burning incense on holidays to wish peace to my ancestors.

From taking over the family business and to only start dating after college.

I am from a Christian and Buddhist perspective of life and to handle every superstition I am told.

I’m from San Leandro and China, fish and bok-choy.

From the tears of unknown sickness, cancer, and fear, the prayers that I pray, and the smiling face that I give.

I am from the highest shelf, forgotten but not lost, snaps of every family moment, the vacations, the marriages and representing the memories that can never be forgotten.
