There’s a place on the other side of town
By Annalyse Sheppard
Grade 12
St. Ignatius College Prep
San Francisco, CA
There’s a place on the other side of town,

Where buses are empty too scared to be ridden.
Where basketball courts are merely half sight,
Hidden behind years of weeds not worth the fight.
Where clapper rails roam almost extinct in this bay,
And the hard, African American soil crumples as we walk over a year old stack of hay.

There’s a place on the other side of town,

Where having a home is as good as it gets.
Where the backyard does not wonder and sparkle with a pool,
But stinks and fouls with “F” rated ground.
Where drinking water of arsenic, lead, mercury and zinc
Is like slipping on a luxurious fur coat of mink.

There’s a place on the other side of town,

Where cancer rates are four times as high,
Yet never stopped to ask the question, Why?
The answer they know is inside the questioner’s heart,
Where red lining burns a terrifying stark.
This is the dump, their home,
For nuclear waste and power plant domes.

There’s a place on the other side of town,

Where “superfunds” put the rest of town at ease
Thinking that “dirty old corner” will be once restored,
Ha what a tease!
The stained “gripple grass” will always stench faint in the breeze.

There’s a place on the other side of town,

It’s called Hunter’s Point
Have you heard of it?
People say it is nothing more then a grimy old pit.
This corner of dystopia is but a step away from hell.
But to some it’s called home.
So after a long day’s sweat at the bays radiated port,
They retreat back to their own beautiful fort.
Others believe with a twist and a kick,
This place will one day be a hit!
