Debaters Square Off Over Alternative Energy

By Gary Tran
Grade 12
Media Academy, Fremont HS
Oakland, CA

Deeply thought-out words flew through the air as students debated whether the government should give tax credits for alternative energy.

All this happened as debaters finished out the first season of the Bay Area Urban Debate League with a two-day city championship at Fremont Federation of High Schools on May 16-17.

At the city championships and in six regular season tournaments, everyone's arguments revolved around the same topic: Should the federal government increase incentives for alternative energy? Students argued detailed cases involving brownfields, gentrification, micro-hyrdo power and capitalism.

At the finals, Skyline High School took the Sweepstakes Award as well as the varsity championship and novice championship trophies. Senior Mya Whitaker and freshman Zach Seidl defeated three-time tournament champions Jessica Winsley and Tevah El Ehmet of Street Academy in the varsity finals on Sunday.

Fremont Federation, represented by Media Academy and Paul Robeson High School, took home Sweepstakes Runner-Up.

Freshman Jazmin Garcia of Media Academy and sophomore Juan Ramos of Paul Robeson went undefeated on the first day and in first two rounds on Sunday, but lost to Skyline's top novice team of Daneya Clay, Treschanna Green by a 2-1 decision by the judges in the final debate.

Whitaker, who also won the top speaker of the year, said debate was valuable.

"I learned communications skills, how to hold your thoughts and how to hold your anger," she said.

Whitaker was one of four Oakland students to compete in the National Urban Debate League championships in Chicago on April 23-26. Other national debaters were Winsey and
David Benoit of Street Academy and Kayla Wheatfall of Skyline.

Seidl, the runner-up speaker of the year, said he learned a lot about alternative energy and current events through debate.

"Debate is a great thing," he said. "I don't see any reason why not to join."

In the photo below, Debater Tevah El Ehmet of Street Academy gets cross examined by Skylin High's Mya Whitaker during the Bay Area Urban Debate League's city championships at the end of last school year.
