Jack Mejia-Cuellar

Gloria “Jack” Mejia-Cuellar is a junior at Media Academy in Oakland, California. As a sophomore, Mejia’s work was published in the school newspaper the Green and Gold, the Oaktown Teen Times and the school magazine Tiger Talk. Her book review “Can Vampires Build Your SAT Score?” won third place in the Northern California Press Women 2010 High School Journalism Contest. She is also on the Green News’ Student Editorial Board, and the Youth Advisory Board for the San Francisco writing organization 826 Valencia, which assists teens in developing their writing skills. Mejia runs a music blog with her twin sister, Kim Mejia (musicaddictblog.tumblr.com). Devoted members of the Fremont Debate team, the Mejia siblings launched a monthly debate column last year for the Green News. The column won the Green News’ Visuals & Voices Award for 2010. She is an avid reader (mostly science fiction) and names L.J. Smith, Rachel Caine, Daniel Waters and George Orwell as some of her favorite authors. When she isn’t writing, Mejia loves going to concerts and discovering new music. She looks forward to running the debate column and contributing different compositions for the Green News. “I’m thrilled that people read my work, especially the debate column,” Mejia said. “The Green News is a respected website, and being part of it is such an honor. I look forward to providing my work to the site and helping it grow.”
